Around the House: Living Room

Our living room has evolved quite a bit in the past few months. When we moved in, it looked like this:

You can see the dining room area in this pic [plus that hideous fan I'd like to violently rip out of the ceiling. Ugh. Those lampshades should be illegal].

After getting rid of our embarrassingly-awful college furniture, we made a Clampetts-come-to-town trek huge trip to IKEA in the old Nissan (R.I.P.) with the new home owner tax credit to get an all new living room. Much assembly later (thanks to two very good friends), we had two Karlstad love seats, a Poang chair, and other fun stuff.

We've changed the furniture arrangement a few times, always dealing with the awkward layout of the space-- it's a pass-through from the side entry/dining room to the main hallway, and it only has two walls (one of which has a wonderful picture window to the front yard). Here it is today with our brand new Sivik dark gray covers. Yummy.

Our goal for this space is, and always has been, for it to be comfortable and inviting. We've still got some work to do, but it's getting there!

To do list:

+ More art, working in a green accent and nature. I've got a few ideas:
I still heart this print from Urban Outfitters a few years ago. I don't think they carry it any more, but it would be pretty simple to DIY it by photographing some backyard greenery and stick it on a canvas (maybe a place like Canvas Pop).

If we get another TV in the future, I'd love to do something like Stefani at Brooklyn Limestone did. It would certainly liven up our blank wall!

Mr. GI and I have thrown around the idea of having a big clock on the apex of that wall. Basically, we'd buy really big clock hands and the clock mechanism and slap it up on the wall, maybe paint some numbers, maybe not.

+ Bamboo shades. Love the look of curtains with shades underneath.

+ Area rug (we think an 8'x10' would fit best), which will probably end up being jute or sisal since I'd love to go with a natural fiber without too many off-gassing chemicals. But I'll keep dreaming about this one from Dwell Studios, or, if money really weren't an issue, this one from Rugs USA. It would look SO great with our charcoal couches.

And the boring stuff...
+ Fix cracks in drywall
+ Replace fan!!

Moving next to the kitchen!

Source list:
All products from IKEA unless otherwise noted. Yes, we just might have an addiction to the Swedish blue box.
Karlstad love seats; Poang chair; Lack side tables; Jonsbo Gryby table lamp with Jonsbo shade; Kassett DVD boxes and magazine files in green and white; Besta Adal TV unit in black-brown; storage ottomans from Bed Bath & Beyond
